School of Philosophy and Social Development

    School of Philosophy and Social Development with a dedicated, well-formed and professional teaching and research staff, is one of the oldest well-structured units of NWUPL. Professor Zhao Fujie, a senior professor in the school, is the president of the Social Sciences Society of Shaanxi Province. The school has 27 full-time teachers including 3 professors and 10 associate professors, of whom 13 have doctoral degrees. The school focuses on the moral educational concept of “knitting knowledge into thought, thought into wisdom, wisdom into character”. Through decades of continuous development, the school has possessed one state-level specialty, one province-level specialty, one provincial characteristic course, and four times has been awarded provincial key discipline.

    The school has two undergraduate programs and two graduate programs. In recent years, nearly 40% of its graduates have obtained the opportunity to pursue further study in domestic and oversea key universities and a high proportion of postgraduates have obtained doctorates in oversea universities. Because of high employment rate of its graduates, the school is praised as “Excellent Unit in Employment Rate”.

    Philosophy

    The specialty is to foster talents in philosophy who are strong in thinking and rich in knowledge and able to do further research on social sciences and humanities. The specialty is also to foster talents with comprehensive knowledge and strong adaptability to meet the needs of state organs, enterprises and schools.

    Its main courses include Marxist Philosophy, Chinese Philosophy, Western Philosophy (originals), History of Philosophy, Philosophical Principles of Marxism, Contemporary Western Philosophy, Introduction to Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Technology, Logic, Ethics, Religion, Psychology, Aesthetics, along with some optional courses and a number of required courses for all university students.

    Sociology

    The specialty is to foster talents with comprehensive knowledge of sociology, who are proficient in social investigations and able to analyze and solve social problems through sociological theories and methods. The specialty is also to foster high-level specialists who are able to do social and market research in all kinds of foreign and domestic companies, departments of the Party and the government, enterprises and institutions and competent in community management, organization and personnel management.
Its main courses include Principles of Sociology, Social Psychology, Social Anthropology, Theory of Modern Western Sociology, Introduction to the Community, Social Statistics, Data Analyzing Techniques, Research and Methods of Social Survey, Introduction to Social Work, Chinese Society, Social Security Studies, Economic Sociology, along with some optional courses and a number of required courses for all university students.

    To help students lay a solid foundation for further study, the school focuses on fostering students’ specialized theoretical knowledge, innovative spirit and practical ability through studying and teaching the original works.
